Chapter Ten
Choices
BRANDON RUBBED THE bridge of his nose. His prayer time had been a struggle. Had been for quite some time. Was it the exhaustion? Or his own fight against the line he’d drawn with Amanda? The line God told him to draw?
He sucked in a deep breath and closed his eyes. It was no use. Would there ever be reconciliation between them? Or would there always be this longing, this emptiness within him?
Only God knew. So he would just have to trust.
Gazing toward the night sky from his seat on the porch, he prayed once again. If the God Who crafted each of those twinkling stars cared for him like the Bible promised, everything would work out. He’d just have to have faith.
Lifting his Bible, he stood and turned toward the front door. The house had long since fallen quiet.
Stepping into the dining room, he startled. A clatter sounded from the kitchen. Cook had already left for her home. Who was up and about? Samuel need a snack?
Perhaps now was as good a time as any to become acquainted with the boy. Brandon set his Bible on the dining table and made his way toward the kitchen. Pushing the door open, he entered the smaller room.
But a flash of long hair and a white nightdress caught his eye.
“Amanda?”
She spun on him, eyes wide, mouth open slightly.
He couldn’t help but take her in. Her eyes were puffy and swollen. Had she been crying? Why? What had happened? His heart turned.
As his eyes moved over her figure, her hands caught his attention. They were bandaged. Had she been injured? Cook said she had a headache. Everything in front of him spoke otherwise.
“Are you unwell?” He moved toward her.
She stepped back, bumping into the counter. “No. I am well enough.” Amanda pulled her hands around her back.
Was she frightened of him? He halted his progress, and she seemed to breathe easier.
He opened his mouth, but the right words wouldn’t come. Floundering for a moment, he closed his lips and swallowed past a lump in his throat.
Couldn’t he just reach out and take her in his arms? Wouldn’t that make everything better? But that was not the answer.
She bit at her lip, but held his eyes. “I…was just looking for something to eat.”
Brandon nodded. She had missed dinner. “Are you better?”
Nodding, her face turned in the direction of the floor. Her hair fell in waves to both sides of her face. Did she not usually gather it in a braid for bed? His face warmed at the realization that he knew something so intimate about her. At length, he spoke into the silence, “I was worried.”
She met his gaze again. Was that moisture in her eyes? Had he made her upset?
Brandon took a step forward. “Please.” He held out his hands. “I know we haven’t always had the best of understanding between us. But I wish…” Pausing, he looked off to the side. Then secured her eyes again. “Tell me what’s wrong?”
